Methodical approach to courses

Correct methods you find fun, give you long-term motivation to stick with the language and keep on improving. Verified methods, that stem from cognitive psychology and our own experience with students, are inbuilt into the EasyLingo system.

Controlled revision method

In order to successfully master a language, you need to store vocabulary and grammar in your long-term memory. This is achieved through the controlled revision method, that means revising in doses over set periods of time.

When we do, hear or see something for the first time, a connection develops between the neurons in our brain. This connection gets weaker and disappears over time. If we do something repeatedly, the connection becomes stronger. We are then able to recall the information in the future.

According to the forgetting curve, which was discovered by professor Hermann Ebbinghausen in the 19th century, we forget about two-thirds of what we learn on any given day within 24 hours. In 6 days, we forget about 75% of what we had learned.

In order to help our students as much as possible, we’ve extended Ebbinghausen’s forgetting curve by the controlled revision curve. We’ve designed an extremely helpful revision system for students of foreign languages. If you adhere to this system of revision, your memory will store 4 times as much as it would the traditional way.

This method is inbuilt in our educational software. When you study with the EasyLingo courses, the system automatically proposes what you should revise according to the controlled revision method. Therefore, you’ll be able to utilise your time to the fullest.

Study just 20 minutes a day

Our brain works the same way our muscles do. If you put too much weight on it, it stops processing new information. If you study in 45-minute blocks, you forget more than half of what you tried to learn. According to the attention curve, our concentration goes up in the first two minutes and then it starts to decrease.

In order to fully utilise your brain’s ability to concentrate, we recommend studying for approximately 20 minutes in one study block. Ideally, you’d have two to three such blocks in a day, but even just one is enough and better than nothing. Do this five, six days a week at most. Leave yourself one or two days for relaxation, your brain needs it.

The best thing is that you don’t need to keep track of anything. At the beginning of the course, you set how often and for how long you’re going to be studying and the app will keep track of it for you.

30 % new and 70 % revision

Do you remember when they tried to force new grammar and vocabulary down your throat every single language lesson? You hadn’t even had a chance to revise material from the week before. Typical language education is ineffective and it can easily overwhelm you. Soon, you start to feel like you’re stagnating and that you’re never going to be able to learn the language.

That’s why you should learn 30% of new material only and revise 70% of old material every day. You could hardly afford revision of such intensity with a lecturer.

However, you’re the boss in this situation and you are the only one in control of your education time. You can focus on precise revision. The app will let you do that. It assigns you individual daily doses according to your needs so that you revise 70% of old material and only go over 30% of new material.

Practicing vocabulary with cards

Vocabulary can be a difficult discipline if you try to cram it. Thanks to the daily 20 minutes of studying and the controlled revision method, you’ll be able to learn it without any problems.

In addition, you will study with the help of digital cards in our courses. All you need to do is decide whether you want to read or listen to the vocabulary, what way you’re going to be practicing it and whether it’ll be from your mother tongue to English, or the other way around.

You’ll be able to practice vocabulary 12 different ways, according to whichever one is most convenient for you. In the following days, the system feeds you the vocabulary for revision according to how well you did.

Practicing pronunciation the LRRC method

In EasyLingo, you practice the pronunciation of phrases and words using the LRRC (listen – repeat – record – compare) method. You listen to the word or phrase, repeat it and the system records you. It replays your pronunciation of the word and then the way you should have pronounced it.

You get immediate feedback and you know what was incorrect about your pronunciation and how to correct it. Practice the pronunciation of each word for as long as you need without feeling like you’re wasting someone’s time.

If you want to learn a foreign language, you need to have fun while studying so that you have long-term motivation. Therefore, our courses are full of gamified and motivational elements.
